Light Ov Orange

“It’s the howling. It never stops. Like the hum but a million times worse. Wretched hounds of a hell you can’t even imagine. Why, who knows what misery they sing about, they could be tracking us right now! Move on hurry hurry, we are going to be late, stupid girl, stop dilly daddling and get a move on!” The rabbit went on and on, becoming more frantic as the howls got louder. But she didn’t care. She didn’t think they were coming for her, no, not yet. Maybe later. Maybe down in the deeper darkness of endless despair, if she found herself there. But not now. Now she was strong, she was sure, she knew who she was, but more importantly, she knew what she was.

And the beasts were scared of that.

So she took her sweetassed time, walking through the nightmares at her own pace, trying to understand what was laid before her, so that she might not have to grace this place ever again. And, as always, just as she had that thought, the ground rose up before her, as if in challenge to her very thoughts. A giant gate of red brick and bloodied bone stood before her, a glowing light of orange flowed through the dirt to form into a monster in front of the gate.

It had the head of a oxen, the body of an elephant, the legs of a horse, the tail of a leopard. The eyes shone with blue light, the body a mix of autumn hues glowing in that orange light. It opened it’s mouth and a thousand times a thousand bright yellow bees found flight. Around her being they flew, their formation that of a long winding scarf, before disappearing into the dark of night.

She stood very still, but her eyes were alive, she knew fear had no place here and did not let hers rise past the flutter of wings within her tummy. Curious at what this thing was, she maintained her silence, not wanting to provoke it, not in this place of dark nightmares.

The monster in turn, simply stood there, and stared deep into her eyes. She felt it try to pry open her soul, but she kept her mind tight, the doors all shut and locked, the key of fear was no where in sight, this monster was not going to get in, not that way.

Suddenly it threw its head back and let out a monstrous bellow, that shook the land and made the hounds whimper and hide in the shadow. The butterflies beat their wings with renewed fury and tried to reach her mind. She held them at bay, the bunny went limp in her hand, and his faint was enough to make her grin. This seemed to upset the monster, whose bellow was cut off abruptly by her smile.

The blue eyes shone so bright as to make her squint and shield her eyes. One step towards her it took, lowering it’s face so that it was before her and opened its mouth so she could eyeball its sharp rows of teeth.

Out of nowhere a great dark giant cat appeared, jumped upon her being and caught her unawares. Upon the dead ground he held her tight, his face growling into hers, opens his mouth and a small round disc falls out upon her forehead. The burn is intense, she shoves the feline from her body as she rolls to try and pry the coin from her head, but it has melded with her skin, it is sinking into her skull and her fingers can not stop it, can not grip it, and behind her the monster laughs as it turns back to light and flies back through the gate. She jumps to her feet and goes after it, not realising that the orange glow is emitting from her forehead now, surrounding her body, and as she jumps at the gate, she realises it has surrounded her, and into light she becomes, and through the gate her form is gone.

The bunny sits at the gate. Sadness fill his eyes. She was gone and now he was left here without her. how would she get by? For hours upon end, he sat there, watching the gate, not knowing where she had gone, unable to leave, but destined to wait until the end of time, if that is what it took, for his mistress to come back for him. The jaw that grasped him was hot and very wet. This is it, thought the bunny, a hound has gotten him and that is that. But this was no hound, this was the big black beast, and he had had his fill of meat and bone, he ran at the gate, and became orange mist gone too, where bunny and beast.
